Is charityBay legitimate?
This is a question we have received more regularly than what we would have hoped. With any new start-up company, there can always be some concerns from the general public about jumping on board. I mean we get it – it’s a new platform, you may not have heard many people chat about it yet, or maybe you don’t quite know how it works yourself! But in time, we hope for you to learn and love what we are trying to achieve here at charityBay. We want to put your mind at ease and within this blog piece, we hope to delve a little deeper into how this organisation works.
The word ‘scam’ is.. quite frankly, scary. Whether you’re a fully established charity or a platform just starting out with a mission to assist charities, every now and then the ‘scam’ word seems to pop its head up and take you off guard. Although it can be scary, it's also understandable. But sometimes all we need is a little knowledge and reassurance to believe in a new start-up – like charityBay. So, feel free to read on and get to know us a little better.
Our humble little team of 6 volunteers created this platform from the ground up and our purpose is to invigorate the charity sector to bring it into the 21st century. Our online processes may seem daunting at first, but once you lift the hood and have a look at the engine underneath and how the platform runs – you can feel assured that the proceeds of your auctions are going directly to those nominated by you!
Building the Concept
charityBay started out from a simple idea. We were tired of seeing items dumped on nature strips. Items which still had life in them and could be used and loved by someone new. We believed this was not only a waste of physical items worth valuable money, but it was putting unnecessary pressure on local governments in removing them, for them to sadly, be left to perish in landfill.
So alternatively, what charityBay provides is an opportunity for everyday people to not only assist the environment but just as equally important – help those in our communities and around the world who need an extra helping hand. All of a sudden, with a couple of clicks, you can auction your pre-loved items and donate the proceeds to any charity you choose. We give you the option! Are animals your thing? Perhaps you want to fight the battle against hunger or assist in medical research. We know these organisations are important to you, and so too are they important to us. We believe in creating change, giving back to charities who support the causes that truly need it, and utilising the world of technology to reinvigorate old habits.

Keeping Your Donations Safe
Ensuring your donations are kept safe and sent to your charity of choice is our #1 priority, and we want you to know how we do this securely and safely.
Stripe is the payment gateway we use to achieve all of the monetary transactions on charityBay. Stripe is a safe, secure and well-known company which gives you, the buyers and sellers, some assurance that you’re covered in case of any unforeseeable circumstances shall they arise. An example of this, in the event where the transaction may not be completed, you would be entitled to a full refund.
charityBay also does not hold any of the donation proceeds within its operational accounts, this money is stored in a secured holding account where the funds are then sent directly to the lucky charities (either at the start of every month or once $1000 is raised, whichever comes first).
How do you know your donations are going to charities?
Not only is it important for you to know your money is going to the right place, but it’s also great to know how that money will be used to help reach your chosen charity’s goals. At the moment, we ask all participating charities to update us on how all donations created through charityBay are used, and we will then pass this on to the individuals involved in making this happen!
*Keep an eye out for our frequent updates as we continue to provide solutions that bridge the gap between you and those you want to help.
From the charity’s perspective, each organisation has its own ‘Charity Portal’ which analyses information of their donations and the user’s engagement with that charity. For example, all charities are able to see when an item is listed for auction under their charity name, how many total items they have on pending auction, how many successful sold items, and their total donation figure generated. This process is all done automatically, which guarantees the charity complete transparency on the monetary figure of donations they can expect to receive. Rest assured, privacy is of our utmost importance and therefore we do not disclose any contact information between parties on our platforms.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know us. charityBay has come about to create change, inspire a new way of thinking and to ultimately give back to those in our community who truly need it. Whoever is important to you – is important to us.
So whether you’re a charity, a buyer/donor, or have any other questions you’d love to be answered – we want to hear from you!
